Word is out that Russia's richest man, Mikhail Prokhorov, is buying the New Jersey Nets, making him the first non North American majority owner of a pro American sports team.
With this purchase, the Nets should have the financial backing to go to Brooklyn as part of their attempt to remake themselves and make them attractive to LeBron and other premier free agents in the near future.
If Prokhorov, wants Russians to get a taste of good NBA coaching, he'll most likely have to hire a new coaching staff for the Nets.
I'm not against foreign owners per se, since this is an era of globalization. But all Stern seems to care about is the money and Prokhorov is a symbol to Russian immigrants of what's gone wrong with Russia. Namely, the suppression of true democracy and the rise of oligarchs, who gained a lot of wealth at the expense of the country and people. He was also involved in a prostitution scandal in France a few years ago.
At least he doesn't seem to have mafiozy ties.
I wonder what Prokhorov's purchase of the Nets will bring?
